Franciscans thrived in FL
By 1655 over 50 brown-robed friars labored in 39 villages located in present-day Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. At the same time the Franciscans claimed 26,000 Indian converts. With their soldier protectors these missionaries strengthened Spain’s territorial claims on the Southeast and stood at bulwarks against English and French expansion into Florida territory.
