Goveror Aranguiz surveyed Indians and friars about stationing a garrison in Guale
(Worth SGC)
The small garrison established in the fall of 1662 seems to have been withdrawn by the following spring, for during early April of 1663, Captain Antonio de Arguelles was in Guale by order of Governor Aranguiz y Cotes (1663a) in an effort to get the opinions of the Indian micos and caciques of Guale regarding the establishment of a permanent military garrison in the province. Concurrently, the friars of Guale were ordered to provide written statments relative to the current status of the province, and to give their opinions as well. Their letters (see Document 6, this volume) provide crucial details regarding this enigmatic group of Indians named Yamassee.
