All the buildings in town at this time seem to have been of wood, with the better ones tiled or shingled and the rest thatched with palm leaves. By 1666 the government houses, including the counting house and the arsenal, were ready to collapse. A hurricane and flood leveled half the town in 1674, but again rebuilding was done mostly in wood, although there was an oyster shell lime and quarried coquina available on Anastasia Island for the stone masonry of the new Castillo.
