French Huguenots set up Fort Carolineedit

...but in 1564 these same tenacious Huguenots set up a second colony (Fort Caroline) at the mouth of the Saint John’s River in Florida territory. This time Pedro Menendez de Aviles, one of the ablest Spanish naval officers of his day, offered his services to Philip II. Menendez promised to rid the province of the French menace and to occupy Florida effectively for Spain. (Tepaske GSF)
