Menendez founded San Agustin and slew Fort Caroline
The French menace called for action, and Philip sent his ablest seaman to eject the intruders and colonize the threatened coasts. In September, 1565, Menendez de Aviles reached Florida with a large colony and founded San Agustin. Ten days later he marched stealthily overland, surprised Fort Caroline at dawn, and mercilessly slew most of its defenders.1
