Guale became associated with Amelia Island
The identification of Guale with Amelia Island is correct only after 1686, when the Guale missions were moved southward across the St. Marys. "Lengua de Guale" in the early documents meant, variously, the language, an interpreter, the island, the tongue of land, or the district, of Guale.
