Pedro Menendez Marques governed FL amid much Indian revolt
Now for the greater part of two decades the fortunes of the province were directed by his able nephew, Pedro Menendez Marques. Among his manifold difficulties Indian uprisings in Santa Elena and Guale were not the least. A Christian chief was killed in Guale. Soils, commander at Santa Elena, posted down the Inland Passage and hanged some of the offenders. When their chance came, the Gualeans repaid the compliment by massacring nine Spaniards at Espogache, a village near the Altamaha.1 Among the slain was Pedro Menendez, the Crosseyed, another nephew of the Adelantado.
