These Indian disturbances were encouraged by French corsairs who harried the coast, for other Gauls had followed in the wake of Ribaut. They traded profitably in sassafras, and they intrigued with the Indians. But some of them paid dearly for their ventures. One such was Estrozi, head of one of these marauding bands. He was captured by Marques in Guale, taken to San Agustin, questioned, and then summarily executed with twenty-two of his men (1579).
