Gov. Canzo restored the Guale missions
The restoration of the missions followed. They were urgently needed. The coast demanded protection against a new swarm of French corsairs. The interior beckoned. Canzo projected a colony at Tama, and sent Juan de Lara inland nine days to investigate rumors of strangers.1 [Note: 1 Ideas concerning the interior, and plans for interior expansion, are set forth in Ynformacion hecha de oficio ante Don Gonzalo Mendez de Canoo, Gobernador de las Provincias de la Florida, sobre la situation de la Tama y sus riquezas y de la poblacion de Yngleses. San Agustin, February 4, 1600; Carta del Gover." de la Florida, 22 Sep.* 1602 (A. G. I., 54-5-9); Florida, Materias Gubernativas, 1602 (A. G. I., 86-5-24).]
