Missions were not solely a matter of friars and soldier guards. The Indian was the central figure; and he was not always happy. He was between two masters, the secular and the spiritual arms of the state. Sometimes he complained. Sometimes he was able to make his voice heard—not always. His complaints were quite as likely to be echoes of the wranglings of friar and official as of the yearnings of the neophyte for a happier lot.1 In rare instances, as had been the case in 1597, he [the Indian] broke out in open revolt.
