Spain treatied English settlements including SC
Cayagua harbor and not Port Royal was now chosen for the seat of a colony, and there in 1670 Kiawah (Charlestown, Charleston) was founded. The Spaniards called it San Jorge. A few weeks later England's right to Charleston was legalized by a treaty which adopted the principle of actual occupation. By it Spain recognized all English settlements then established, but no others.
