The English colonists found themselves, as they complained, "in the very chaps of the Spaniards." And they soon felt their teeth. One of the vessels bound for Charleston by accident made anchor at Mission Santa Catalina, near the Savannah. The English were treated as invaders. In a skirmish several of the passengers were killed, and by a trick John Rivers and William Carr were captured. Governor Sayle at Charleston sent a rescue expedition with a blustering threat. Joseph Bailey and John Collins carried the message from the sloop to the mission. They, in turn, were captured, and like Rivers and Carr, were sent prisoners to San Agustin.
