A hurricane thwarted Juan MM’s attack on SC
Governor Guerra was alarmed. Here was serious business, indeed. Stay at San Jorge the English must not, for they were on Spanish soil. So three frigates were equipped and put under command of Juan Menendez Marques. Fourteen pirogues rowed by Indians accompanied the ships. When on August 18 the crimson and gold waved off Cayagua harbor there seemed little hope for San Jorge. But the mighty Atlantic intervened to protect the infant colony.
