Charleston’s council journal reflects a hatred for SA’s missions in Guale
Charleston was safe for the moment. But for years the settlers lived in dread. Indian disturbances were charged to Spanish complicity. The danger was increased by runaway white servants and negro slaves. Fear was mingled with anger.2 [Note 2 Uneasiness at Charleston over the Spanish border in 1671-1672 is reflected in the Journal of the Grand Council of South Carolina, August 25, 1671-June 24, 1680] Then arose the cry that "Wallie" with its hated missions must be destroyed. Destroyed they were in due time.
