Old Guale was ruined. But not without a counter blow by Cabrera. He was between pirates and Carolinians—who were not entirely distinct. With three vessels he sent Thomas de León against Carolina (1686). There were a hundred Spaniards in the party and an auxiliary force of Indians. In September they assaulted and completely destroyed the hated Scotch Colony at Port Royal, which had caused so much damage. Some of the settlers they killed; others they captured and plundered. The rest found refuge by flight to Charleston. Among the slain was the Indian chief from whom our old friend Woodward had received his grant of Santa Elena. Continuing north, at Edisto Island, De León sacked Governor Morton's plantation, burned seven houses, and carried off thirteen slaves, besides other plunder amounting to 3,000 pounds sterling. Charleston came next; but once more nature intervened to save it from the Spaniards. In a hurricane De Leon's vessel, the Rosario, was cast ashore, and he with others perished. A second vessel was beached by the storm and then burned. In it perished a captive brother-in-law of the governor. With the third vessel the expedition limped back to San Agustin. Cabrera was even with Lord Cardross.
