Quiroga removed the Apalachicola fort for lack of soldiers
The Apalachicola presidio was short-lived. In the summer of 1691 corsairs again threatened San Agustin. Soldiers were sorely needed and the garrison was withdrawn. In order that the English on the "Rio de Uchise" might not occupy it, the fort was destroyed and even the ditches filled in.1
