Carolina failed to win Alabama country from the French
Apalache annihilated, it was the aim of the Carolinians next to destroy Pensacola, uproot the French of Mobile, and extend trade and dominion to the Father of Waters. In this great game the western Georgia Indians still participated; but the struggle now turned on the control of the Alabama Creeks, next beyond, and of the Chickasaws and Choctaws further west. English and French traders alike donned the war paint and conducted their partisans to battle. The English won over the Alabamas, led them against Pensacola, and against the Choctaws who protected Mobile. But the able Frenchman, Bienville, won back the Alabamas. Peace in 1714 left Pensacola and Mobile intact, and the French secure in the Alabama basin.1
