To Oglethorpe the San Juan was only a means to an end. Vernon had won fame by capturing Puerto Bello; his was the task to take San Agustin. Hurrying to Charleston he raised 500 men under Colonel Vanderdusen; and with Commodore Pearce he arranged for cooperation with the coast fleet. In April he welcomed a new contingent of Indian allies.
