It was hoped that Vernon would next attack Havana….But just now Spain sent Torres to the West Indies with a powerful Spanish fleet. To take Havana was easier said than done. Vernon therefore turned to Cartagena. In his Adventures of Roderick Random, a novel, Smollett wrote a brief account of the expedition against Cartagena, in which he took part as an army surgeon. Gingerly Vernon looked it over. Concluding that it was impregnable by sea, he sent Wentworth to attack it by land. But Wentworth lost heart in the trackless swamps, and turned back. The campaign was soon abandoned, and the fleet returned to Jamaica.
