Guemes was entrusted with preparations. Havana was made the base of supplies and convoy ships. Hist. Soc. Col., Vol. VII, Part III (Savannah, 1913), pp. 20-108.] The expedition was designed to expel the English from Georgia and to devastate South Carolina. It must "inflict a damage that will ruin and terrify them. It must burn all towns, posts, plantations and settlements." It must repay the attacks of Drake, Moore, and Oglethorpe. Above all it must recover Georgia. Two Spanish diaries tell us what happened.2 [Note 2 These are the diaries of Montiano and Casinas (ibid., 5287).] One of them was written by Arredondo.
