Moore journeyed to the Cherokee seeking trade and mines
Mathews had powerful friends in England, but Moore, an indigent Barbadian gentleman with numerous dependents, apparently owed his rise to his own restless energy. As manager of the plantations of Captain William Walley and of Lady Margaret Yeamans, whom he prudently married, Moore launched into cattleraising and Indian trading on a large scale. In 1690 he made his journey to the Cherokee, seeking mines as well as trade. 45 [Note 45: R. F., Present State, 1682, p. 10; C.O. 5 :288, p. 288; JCHA, April 2. 1702; CSCHS]
