Many SC traders lived in exile because of their debts in Charleston
One of their worst traits, from the merchants' standpoint, was financial irresponsibility. Unfortunate wretches there were whose great debts to the Charles Town merchants made them exiles for many years in the Indian country; when some crisis required their presence in Charles Town it was necessary for the assembly to publish a moratorium. 68 [Note 68: See JCHA, November 21, 1706, and Indian Book (MS) II. 135 (.petition of a trader in 1751)]
