SC abandoned Congaree Fortedit

In 1720 the [Congaree] garrison numbered twenty men. But its maintenance proved burdensome at a time when the cost of frontier defense was agitating the assembly, and in 1722 the council ordered its reduction. With the abandonment of Congaree Fort the inland defenses were confined to the line of the Savannah River. 6 [Note 6 Statutes, III; JCHA, May 19, June 15,30, November 17,1716; August 5, 11, 12, 15, 1721; JC, June 5, 1722; JIC, July 10, 11, 1716.]
