Pedro Menendez took full advantage of corsairing rights
The prizes of war were another source of the quinto. Ships were captured from corsairs as well as lost to them. Pedro Menendez de Aviles took thorough advantage of a 6-year letter-of-marque entitling him to any prizes he or his men might take, subject to the crown share of 1/3.
