Pedro Mendendez garrisoned Guale and made peace with the chiefs
The garrison of 30 men that the Adelantado left in Guale was probably on St. Catherines, home of the chief of Guale. There Menendez met with a large delegation of caciques to make peace between Guale and Orista. The chief of Guale allowed the Spaniards to erect a cross and showed a polite interest in Christian magic and spells, while Menendez, as "Mico Santamaria," gained local influence as a rainmaker (Solis de Meras, 1567). [Note: In Spain, a rainmaker was called a "conjurer of clouds."]
