Zuniga also encountered problems in Apalache. Here trouble came as a surprise, for in February, 1701, an important Apalache chief (Nanhuluchuba) reported that Spaniards in the province treated his people kindly. His tribe was suffering because the Floridians could not provide large supplies of food and other necessities, but was in no way being abused or exploited by the military or religious in Apalache.
