Personnel in FL
In 1702 there were 137 infantrymen, 20 artillerymen, and 16 sailors stationed in Saint Augustine proper. Thirty-one footsoldiers garrisoned Fort San Luis de Apalache, thirteen served in Guale mission villages, and three lived among the Timucuans near Saint Augustine. Altogether 25 soldiers guarded the northern and southern entrances to Saint Augustine (the bar of Saint Augustine and the bar of Matanzas, respectively). Another small body of soldiers maintained a lonely vigil at the mouth of the Saint John’s River (the bar of San Juan). [Note 2: gov to king 3/25/1702]
