Zuniga was appointed to the governorship of Cartegenaedit

Then in 1704 the governor received an even more concrete reward. In recognition of his valorous and distinguished service, Zuniga was appointed to the governorship of Cartagena. Like most governors Zuniga was eager to leave Florida, but he could not take his post on the Caribbean until he had faced a residencia. A royal cedula of February, 1703, had already set up machinery for it by appointing the public secretary in Saint Augustine as juez de residencia. [Note: Real cedula, Madrid, 2/10/1703] For the first time the commissioner was to come from Florida rather than from Cuba in order to save travel costs and to avoid the dangers of a wartime sea voyage. [Note: King to gov of FL 4/28/1703] Once the new governor arrived, the required judicial review could begin immediately, and Zuniga could leave for Cartagena without a long delay. The cedula, however, reached Florida in 1704, two years before Zuniga’s replacement reached Saint Augustine. (Tepaske GSF)
