Moore could not control the Yamasees, who pitilessly lanced, burned, or impaled the Apalaches they took prisoner. News of these atrocities spread quickly throughout the Southeast, and many Apalache villages were intimidated into expressing allegiance to the Carolinians by threats of torture, separation of families, or death. At least 12 such villages submitted to the English without a struggle. Moore claimed that by the time he was ready to retire from Apalache only one town of Indians remained under Spanish control, and this village lay under the cannon of Fort San Luis. Zuniga reported from Saint Augustine that over 600 Christian Indians had shifted their loyalties to the English late in 1703 and early in 1704.
