Gov Corcoles had an impressive military background
[Zuniga's] successor, Francisco de Corcoles y Martinez (1706-1716) had an even more impressive record. He had risen through the ranks, first as a cadet, then as lieutenant, reformado [Note: a military officer on detached service], captain, and finally as governor of Florida. He had campaigned in Catalonia, Ceuta, Milan, Palamos, and Gibraltar. He had been a prisoner of war in France and counted wounds in his right leg and left arm among his battle trophies.
