Spanish and French attackers sailed away from Charleston harbor
Spanish losses on the Wando River turned the tide in favor of the Carolinians. On September 11 when Governor Johnson ordered six small launches and a fireship [Note 37: Johnson’s fireship was a vessel carrying both explosives and combustible to be sailed into the midst of the Spanish fleet.] to engage the five ships anchored off Sullivan’s Island, he delivered the coup de grace that drove the attacking force back to Florida. Rather than risk further losses, Lefebvre ordered his five ships to make for the open sea, putting an end to the Spanish-French attempt to take Charleston. Governor Johnson, in the meantime, ended martial law, which he had ordered at the beginning of the attack. [Note 38: Account of the Invasion of SC August, 1706]
