Gov Corcoles used reconstruction money for more pressing needsedit

The 26,000 pesos [that Philip V granted in 1703 to rebuild SA] arrived in Florida in December, 1707. Governor Corcoles would not and could not use the money for the purposes laid down by the king. The governor needed the money to buy food and clothing for the residents, to strengthen colonial defenses, and to pay salaries owning his soldiers. This, he believed, was absolutely essential if the colony was to survive. Reconstruction of the town would have to come later. [Note: gov to king 1/2/1708] (Tepaske GSF)
