For the next five years there was no trouble over this question, but when Pedro Lorenzo de Acebedo assumed his curacy in 1707, the dispute erupted once again. Although the entire story is not clear, it appears that Acebedo hoped to obtain jurisdiction over the Indians who had taken refuge at Saint Augustine during Queen Anne’s War and secure rights over what little the Indians could pay in tithes. Apparently he also hoped to raise his personal prestige in Florida. In this case Governor Corcoles acted more boldly than his processor. With a precedent already established, Corcoles sided with the Franciscan guardian, Martin de Molina, and refused Acebedo’s request.
