FL gov and officials protested paying for an auxiliary bishop out of tithes
In the meantime officials in Spain had wrestled with the problem of Resino’s maintenance and arrived at their own solution. On October 29, 1706, Philip V awarded the new auxiliary 1,000 pesos a year from the Florida tithe. In Saint Augustine the governor and his treasury officials immediately protested. Between 1703 and 1707 revenue from the tithe had produced a total of 1,413 pesos, an average of only 283 pesos a year. [Note 17: royal officials in FL to king 3/5/1708] In December, 1708, therefore, the Council of the Indies proposed another solution. Its members decided to award Resino an income of 3,000 pesos—1,000 from the Florida tithe, which they probably realized could not be collected; 1,000 from the vacant bishoprics of New Spain, always a convenient source to tap; and 1,000 from Cuban tithes. [Note 18: Consejo 12/30/1708] Resino’s six assistants were each to receive 200 pesos a year from the Cuban import and export tax (almojari-fazgo). [Note 19: king to gov of Cuba 7/20/1709]
