The king ordered SA's treasury officials to certify friars before distributing supplies
Three years later the king took steps to strengthen civil control over the regular clergy in Florida. In order to receive their yearly allotment of supplies, the friars had to be certified by the governor and his two treasury officials. [Note 92: Cedula Madrid 2/25/1709] This, he believed, would insure efficient, economical administration of the clerical subsidy and would give civil authorities at least partial control over the regular clergy.
