SA Franciscans had a chance to win 50,000 Indians back to the Spanish side
In 1715 an opportunity arose for the Franciscans to revive their mission program in Florida. In that year chiefs representing an estimated 50,000 Indians (probably an exaggeration) from 161 villages entered Saint Augustine requesting the friendship and protection of the governor. Lower Creeks, Yamasees, and Apalaches, many of whom had opposed Spain during Queen Anne’s War, were now seeking a Spanish alliance. In 1715 it appeared as if the Spaniards would be able to reestablish their preeminence in the Southeast, especially if the Franciscans increased their numbers and received plentiful supplies of food, clothing, and trinkets to complement their spiritual ministrations.
