Gov Benavides had an impressive military background
Antonio de Benavides (1718-1734) rose from a second lieutenancy in the royal guards to become commander of his own body of grenadiers. He served in Flanders and participated in 1702 in the siege of Acre, where he suffered severe wounds that bothered him later in Florida. [Memorial Benavides 1/23/1724]
