Primo’s 60-man expedition reached Apalache on March 15, 1718, and began work immediately. Almost as soon as they broke ground, 20 Indians appeared from Chiscalachisle’s tribe, and on March 20, 150 more Lower Creeks joined them seeking food and muskets. With barely enough supplies on hand to sustain his own force, the Spanish commander could do little more than offer the Indians a little food. Remembering Pena’s glowing promises in the fall of 1717, the natives left for their villages to the north, disillusioned and disgruntled. They had not obtained the rum, muskets, powder, shot, bright-colored cloth, beads, and hats that had in the past been the tangible tokens of friendship.
