Menendez Marques told the king that English and French were bribing Indians awayedit

Without bountiful supplies of arms and food, the governor’s Indian policy lost its effectiveness. Discontented and disillusioned with the Floridians, the Indians turned more and more to English and French traders, who were more generous and more opulent. [Note 35: Contador (Francisco Menendez Marques) to king 10/31/1722] The erection of the blockhouse at Apalache had done little good to stimulate a resurgence of Spanish influence over the Lower Creeks. The commandant there had nothing in his larders with which to satisfy the Indians calling at the fort. (Tepaske GSF)
