Primo's departure for New Spain forced abandonment of St. Joseph's Bay
Lack of supplies and reinforcements, illness, desertion, and Primo’s departure for New Spain forced the abandonment of the tiny stockade in 1723, breaking one link in the chain of Gulf Coast fortifications. [Note 67: Probably the key to the failure at Saint Joseph’s was sending Primo de Rivera to New Spain to stand trial. Without his leadership the tiny garrison simply could not survive.]
