Philip V claimed Benavides was paid far above average
Continuous complaints about low salary did little to improve the governor’s financial condition. In 1725 Philip V equalized the salaries of all governors serving in Peru and New Spain (of which Florida was a part), but this failed to help the governor. The king claimed that the 4,000 pesos awarded to Benavides was an adequate wage, far above the gubernatorial average. [Note: Council for Indians 9/2/1738]
