Palmer's force killed 30 Yamasees at SA
Despite the fact Palmer lost the advantage of a surprise attack, he won a decisive victory at Nombre de Dios on March 9. In the battle his Carolinians killed 30 Yamasees, captured 15, and wounded many more, while the other Indians fled to Fort San Marcos. They found shelter there but discovered that the governor would not move out to meet Palmer’s force, encamped nearby. Refusing to fight a smaller enemy force on familiar terrain, Benavides chose to keep his soldiers under the protective walls of San Marcos, where his only form of resistance was an ineffective barrage of cannon fire on Palmer’s positions.
