Visitador Aheda freed the Indian women enslaved by Velasco
the crown categorically refused to allow the enslavement of Florida Indians, even those who were demonstrably treacherous. The native women whom Diego de Velasco had sold (one of them for 25 ducats), Visitor Castillo y Ahedo told through a translator that they were free, “and each one went away with the person of her choice.” [Note 38: Cedula to the governor of Cuba 8/10/1574; Baltasar del Castillo y Ahedo, Havana, 2/12/1577.]
