Philip II doubled SA's garrison and raised the situado from 33,000 to 48,000 pesos
In 1578 when Philip II doubled the Saint Augustine garrison, this amount increased to 35,000 ducats (approximately 48,000 pesos) and came from New Spain, the source of the subsidy throughout the remainder of the colonial period.
