Benavides and the treasury officials bought the secretary position for Nietoedit

By this time six years had passed since Solana’s death. Hopefully Benavides set up machinery for a second auction in December, 1733. Like the first it was initially unsuccessful. Thirteen days passed without a single bid from the Floridians. On the 14th day, however, the treasurer and the accountant submitted a bid of 150 pesos on behalf of the infantry lieutenant Bartolome Nieto de Carvajal, probably the result of a deal between Nieto, the governor, and the two treasury officials who agreed among themselves to pay the required 300 pesos. On the following day when no counter-offer came, the treasurer and the accountant added 150 pesos to their original bid, enough to purchase the secretaryship for Nieto. Benavides then closed the bidding and installed the infantry captain as secretary pending royal confirmation. [Note: Auto de pregon del oficio de escribano publico, 7/29/1734] (Tepaske GSF)
