Bishop Buenaventura was consecrated in Vera Cruz
By the time Buenaventura arrived in Cuba, the only problem remaining to be resolved was his consecration. Eager to get the new auxiliary bishop to Florida quickly, Philip V ordered the rites to be performed in Cuba. He dispensed with the law requiring three bishops to be present at the ceremony and ordered the bishop of Cuba to secure two prebendaries or canons to substitute for the two prelates. [Note 36: king to bishop of Cuba 11/29/1733] These orders arrived too late, for Buenaventura had already departed for Vera Cruz. Here in the summer of 1734 he underwent the solemnities that consecrated him as auxiliary bishop of Cuba. [Note 37: king to bishop of Cuba 10/30/1735. Buenaventura’s letter of 7/8/1734 recounted the events of his consecration in Vera Cruz.]
