Bishop Martinez Tejada, too, had reasons for dissatisfaction. The Crown had guaranteed him 2200 pesos in income a year, out of which he was expected to support the chaplains, or canons, who attended him during pontifical services. When he learned that his predecessor had not only been paid a higher salary but had also been provided with six chaplains, he protested that he could not maintain the dignity of his office with fewer than six himself (Moral Sanchez, 1735b). The Franciscans would not attend him simply because he was a member of their Order, at least not the creoles.
