For a short time Buenaventura maintained friendly relations with Governor Moral. Moral gave the auxiliary a warm welcome and initially pressed his superiors in Spain to send out the six assistants allotted to the bishop. The governor also complained that Buenaventura lacked sufficient funds to maintain himself in the style befitting of his office.
