Moral ordered all Floridians to obtain his permission to confer with Buenaventuraedit

It was not long before the two quarreled openly. Early in the fall they took opposite sides in a scandal that split the Franciscan order in Florida. [Note 43: Auxiliary bishop of Cuba to king 10/15/1735] Then, when Moral ordered all Floridians to obtain his permission before they conferred with the auxiliary bishop, tension increased, as Buenaventura became convinced that the governor meant to separate him from the soldiers, colonists, and Indians he was trying to serve. [Note 44: Auxiliary bishop of Cuba to Fray Clarke 10/1/1735] At the same time the two men clashed personally. Both were ambitious, jealous of their authority, and determined to protect their positions in Florida. Given their strong wills, a clash was inevitable. (Tepaske GSF)
