Moral arrested a soldier en route to visit his son at the conventedit

In a second case Moral impulsively arrested the able soldier Sebastian Lopez de Toledo. One night in the spring of 1736 the governor and eight grenadiers were making a late-evening inspection of Saint Augustine when they encountered Lopez heading toward the Franciscan convent. Moral stopped the officer and demanded to know why Lopez walked the streets so late in the evening. The soldier replied with some irritation that he was on his way to talk with his son, a friar in the convent, in the hope that he could convince him to resolve the unhealthy quarrel between the Creole and Spanish Franciscans. At this the governor may have colored, for he had already become deeply involved on the Creole side. In any event Moral told Lopez sharply not to meddle in business that did not concern him. The officer replied angrily that the welfare of his son assuredly was his business. Besides, as royal vice patron of the church, Moral should have settled the controversy long ago. This impudence was more than the governor could take. In a fury he ordered his eight grenadiers to seize Lopez and place him under arrest. [n.d.] (Tepaske GSF)
